Its Valentine’s day and bakers are having a field day as cakes are exchange among  loved ones. Ngozi Azubuike of Glitters cakes & deco is one of Abuja’s best bakers and her creations are taste as good as they look. Lets hear how this mother of two started her confectionery journey and be inspired.

Please tell us a little about yourself.
Well my name is Ngozi Vivian Azubuike and by God’s grace the face behind Glitters cake & deco which is a home of bespoke cakes and decorations. I came from a polygamous family of 10 and am the number 4 though the first of two from my mum. My parents gave me the best of education to the best of my knowledge.I passed through nursery and primary at Twin fountains nursery and primary school, went further to Federal Government College Warri, later to IMT Enugu For my National Diploma and then went further to obtain a  Bsc at Enugu State University of Science and Technology.
How and why did you start baking?
Baking was not initially part of my plans. I was only able to bake just a little for the family until my husband took it upon himself to tell some family friends who had visited us that his wife bakes very well and that they should feel free to contact me for their future cakes. As you can imagine I was appalled as I couldn’t ice a cake to save my life at the time. However  he obviously saw something I didn’t and he believed in me. Later on when I asked him about what her had told our our guests he simply just said “what’s the big deal? go and learn the one you don’t know” and  with his prompting I decided to take the plunge and get some training.
Awesome! so your hubby obviously played a big role in your success story.
In fact, that man needs an award for the selfless way he has not only started this business but supported me all through this journey. I worked from home for so many years and you can imagine how crowded the house was with cakes and baking materials all over the place. Despite that he would still see people in public and tell them “my wife’s cakes are the best, you need to try her cakes”. His support has been amazing and I am so grateful to be married to a man who believes so much in me.
Your cakes are so true to life have you always been artistic?
Thanks a lot for the compliment. However I  my ability to draw on paper is awful even my handwriting on paper is not anything to be proud of. So I can honestly tell you that my cake decoration skills are a totally God given talent. There are some artistic things in cake making that I have created that really surprise me.
You have two beautiful daughters and I am sure they watch you when you bake and decorate cakes, have any of them already started to display  skills?
Absolutely! My last daughter totally wants to know everything and she actually helps out with some little things when time permits.
Cake decorating can be time consuming how do you ensure you don’t miss customers deadlines and you are on top of the latest trends?
The simple answer to this is the passion that drives me.The desire to achieve that superb end result keeps me awake some nights  to not only finish orders  but to see what I have done in good time . That way I am able  to meet the customers expectations and surpass them if possible. The passion also  keeps me on my toes so that I am always learning. I watch so many sugar artists all over the world and draw inspiration from them to ensure that I am  keeping in tune with what’s happening in the cake industry.
Great! You also teach others now, tell us about your recent buttercream training?
It was a fulfilling class the students learnt so fast! It was also very interactive and smooth. I am always  encouraged when I see people that are dedicated and eager to learn.I plan to continue to hold such training from time to time.
You are a mum and wife how do you combine all the roles? Are you able to get time to relax?
Being a wife and a mum are huge blessings in my life and I don’t take it for granted. I make sure to do my wifely and motherly duties and try my best to balance both with my work too.I do not joke with my vacations and take time off work  to spend more time with my family and to ease the body too. It is not easy but I also have staff that help to reduce the work load and afford me time to attend to my family. I am a foodie so that helps me relax. I also love to swim and of course a spa treatment every now and then helps me relax.
Its been great talking to you Ngozi thanks and God bless!
