Muna Okam : The Lady behind Chloe’s Cupcake Heaven

If you are in Abuja no one does cup cakes and ice-cream better than Muna Okam of Chloe’ Cupcakes! This enterprising and beautiful woman turns 34 today and is re-opening her flagship store today as part of the celebrations! Lets read about this resilient lady.  Happy Birthday Muna!

Tell us  little about you and what you do?

I was born 34 years today  in Owerri town , Imo state. I have 3 blessed children aged 8, 6 and 3.  I am the owner of Chloe’s Cupcake Heaven, a fast growing premium dessert company located in Abuja. Our main goal is to establish and manage premium desserts cafes all over Nigeria and beyond. I am also the CEO of Chloe’s food and dairy products Limited, a manufacturing company tasked with the manufacturing and retailing of premium desserts with Nigeria. We currently produce Nigeria’s first commercial premium ice cream and also manufacture gourmet popcorn. One thing that makes our business stand out is our complete addiction to quality without compromise and a continuous need to re-invent ourselves by being innovative with our menu, never getting complacent about what we do but always striving to do better, at all times.

You have a new product on the store shelves, tell us about it.

in 2015, we set up Chloe’s Food and Dairy Products Limited, a sister company to our more popularly known company Chloe’s Cupcake Heaven. CF&D is the commercial manufacturing arm of our business. Through it, we rolled out our packaged premium ice cream; Chloe’s Ice cream and our line of gourmet popcorn, Chloe’s Gourmet Popcorn. Our aim is to manufacture products of international quality comparable to any produced anywhere in the world and I believe with these two pioneer products, we’ve succeeded in doing that. I don’t see why we can’t have our very own Haagen Dazs ice cream made by a Nigerian company for the Nigerian market and beyond. Our plan is to have these products become a staple in homes and establishments all over Nigeria and by God’s grace, we will get there.

Running a business can be challenging and recently your flagship store was demolished. Tell us about that experience and how you were able to deal with it?

Yes yes yes, running a business can be pretty challenging particularly in a country like ours. My store being demolished was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to go through in recent times. It took us completely by surprise which made it even harder to process. How did I deal with it? as with everything else in my life, but particularly for this, I would say it was by the sheer grace of God and  I refuse to take any glory for it. He lifted up my head and He kept me strong through it.

You are a Mum of 3 , how has motherhood has affected what you do?

My business is my 4th child frankly speaking. I mean I go through all the motions I feel with my kids with it: pure joy, pride, exasperation, undying devotion to mention just a few. Being a mother enlarges your capacity to deal with the most heart wrenching situations and still find the strength within to push on. For example, when your child is very ill no matter how much you just want to curl up under the covers and bawl your eyes out, you have to be strong, not for you this time, but for your sick child. At that time, they need you so you put your emotions aside and do what needs to be done. Likewise in work, sometimes, it feels like it’s all crumbling down or it’s not working out and you just want to give up, but you find the strength from within and keep on keeping on. You don’t live anymore just for yourself but for your kids and for your vision which if you are lucky, is your work.

What lessons do you hope your children will learn from you?

Well firstly, I would like for them to know that Everything they need to get ahead in life, they have in Christ Jesus and as long as they have God, they have it all. If they can add a bit of tenacity, determination and indefatigability to that, they would grab the sky with their hands.

How do you refresh and rejuvenate?

I absolutely love massages. It relaxes me. So when I find that it’s all gotten a bit too much. I book a hot stone massage and I’m lucky to have found an amazing masseuse here in Abuja. I’ve also found that sometimes we just need a time out. At such times, I go for what I call “my retreat” and I simply check into a hotel for the weekend and I don’t step out of the hotel for the duration of my stay. I just sleep and order room service ,I have to do  this in another city otherwise i would be running home to my kids at midnight.

We are excited that so soon after the heart-breaking demolition your new store is opening! Congrats! Please tell us about it?

Isn’t God amazing? Barely 2 months after the demolition and we are back up and running. I think the miracle of it is that we are in a bigger and better space and we didn’t have to change addresses. our store is still located in the same location it’s always been.  We are so excited about what we can do with our new space and hope to see you all at our re-opening later today at 35 Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja.

  1. She is so inspiring! Can’t believe how much she has accomplished and is still accomplishing at just 34! Lovely piece.

  2. Awesome. Apart from the fact I needed to comment on the blog because I want to win a contest to get the esther anointing, i haven’t stopped reading your posts. I was drawn to this because I felt her pain when the shop was demolished. She has just inspired me to get my act together. Well done muna.
