“See My Mates? Yes. But this is my journey.

I was telling my aunt how I wished I had made certain career choices earlier. She responded with something so simple yet profound:
“It’s okay you were able to spend time raising your children—what could be more important than that?”

It’s so easy to compare timelines and to feel like you’re behind your peers. But the truth is, everyone’s path and career trajectory is different.

There’s constant pressure to achieve everything quickly—to hit certain career milestones by a specific age, to make one list or another. But always remember, like I always tell the women I coach, the race is not to the swift.

Some people figure out their purpose at 20, others at 40. Some start over multiple times, while others get it right the first time. Some experience rapid promotions, while others may feel stuck in one role for years. Whatever your career journey looks like, make the best of it and keep your head up.

Every season serves a purpose. The roles I had truly did mean I had more time raising my children, and that certainly wasn’t lost time—it was time well spent. The time I spent in my previous roles was filled with valuable lessons. And when the time came to step into my next season, I did.

So if you ever feel like you’re behind, remember this: make the best of every moment and enjoy the journey. Stay positive, embrace growth, and always carry an attitude of gratitude.

Have you ever felt “behind” in life or career? Have you ever seen your contemporaries and said, “see my mates?” How did you navigate it?
